Tim: One of the fascinating things about video games is the sheer breadth of different types. You have big video games where companies spend millions upon millions of dollars and years and years of development to release. Then, you have a game like Bird vs. Bird, a short puzzle game I played on an In-Flight screen while I was flying from Scotland back to the U.S. This is still a video game, it still counts. Even though it's minuscule compared to others.
The game is pretty straightforward- the game takes place on a grid made out of vines. There's an orange bird trying to escape, and you have to place black birds in their path to stop them. It seems simple, but it definitely took me a few minutes to figure out the patterns to stop the bird's escape. It's not an especially difficult game (it's certainly for kids), but it takes a few minutes to get the mechanics down. Pretty straightforward. Then, you have to switch and play as the orange bird and escape from the black birds. It's not a great game overall, but I liked the idea of having to play as both birds, switching roles and having a different obstacle- one is to prevent escape, the other is to escape.
As a whole, I didn't play Bird vs. Bird very long, but I did lose a number of times and grumbled as I had to restart. Like many puzzle games, it's fairly straightforward to start but still has some level of complexity. I believe any thinking person who takes a few minutes to pay attention could beat it- it's not especially difficult. However, most people ignore games like this. The development budget had to be so small and indeed, I struggled to find much mention of this game online. I couldn't confirm who developed it or many details about it. Honestly, I spent more time researching it than I should have.
I'm glad I beat this game and I wanted to include it on my list because not every video game is great- there's thousands of these small video games out there. I don't spend much time playing them, but it did give me a chance to experience what they are like. And, if I'm looking for positives, Bird vs. Bird did take my attention for a little while and helped make a long flight go quicker.
