Review:

Tim: The Secret Life of Kyle is the 11th Despicable Me short film but the first one I've seen. This is probably because I greatly dislike the subpar franchise and have never actively sought out any of the shorts. This one is pretty decent, though. It's not like it's especially compelling or entertaining, but it's not a bad way to spend four minutes.

The story follows Kyle, who apparently is the dog in the Despicable Me films. I have to be honest, I didn't even remember that there was a dog. Apparently, it's Kyle. Anyway, Kyle wants to impress a poodle, even though he faces a challenger in that obstacle. The short is his attempt to get her attention. It's perfectly fine, it connects with emotions people feel- wanting to be noticed, frustrated when you aren't. I thought that focus of the film was a worthwhile one.

The Minions make an appearance and provide some levity (the sunburn gag). It's fine, it's not relevant to the story, but we're used to that with this franchise. The animation was decent, but nothing spectacular.

While there's not a ton here, The Secret Life of Kyle is still a decent short film. We get to learn more about a marginal character in the Despicable Me franchise and his emotional state is one most people can relate with. There's certainly been worse dog-focused short films in 2017 (looking at you, Puppy).
