Review:
Tim: I am trying to broaden my horizons by seeing more short films, instead of the typical feature length movies I watch. This is an interesting one, from 1922. The Original Movie walks the audience through the filmmaking process- from the writer bringing his masterpiece to the studio, to the cuts to the story, the casting, the censors making their cuts, and finally, the screening of the movie (which coincidentally, is nothing like the original work). The interesting thing about this movie is that it really shows that as much as has changed in Hollywood, so much is still the same.
This short film is definitely interesting. It is very basic, but there is also a beautiful to how stripped down and simple it is. When you think about the complicated productions in Hollywood today, they seem incompatible with this movie, done when motion pictures were still in their infancy.
I certainly wouldn't recommend this short film except for the true movie lover. There are some humorous moments. The goat is funny. I loved the idea of the dinosaur allowing the cinematographer to film from on high. The title of the movie (within the movie) "Who's the Goat?" makes me laugh every time I hear it.
So, besides trying to push the boundaries of your film knowledge, this movie doesn't have a great deal of substance. It was certainly interesting (and my first and second viewings felt very different), and I'm glad I saw it.
