Summary: The Minions decide to enroll in summer camp, but their attempts to earn badges backfire.

Review:

Tim: I've never been a fan of the Minions, but I'm a proponent for using them in small doses. In that sense, they are perhaps best fitted for short films. We can sit down here, watch their antics, and four minutes later, move on. That's the best format for them. Anything longer and they start to get super annoying. Fortunately, that's not the case here. I might not have loved this short, but it's certainly tolerable.

I know many, many people love minions and I totally understand the appeal. It's just that what makes them funny quickly turns annoying. That doesn't happen here- we can chuckle at their craziness in a fairly self-contained and focused story. The humor is mostly juvenile, as we've come to expect from these characters, but it isn't all bad.

The idea here is straightforward- the Minions want to earn merit badges at summer camp and everything they try to do backfires and creates larger and larger messes and problems for the scout masters. This is fairly entertaining. It's tolerable for adults and my four year-old son had a fun time watching the insanity unfold on screen. It's all very harmless and at least mildly entertaining.

I haven't seen many minion short films, but it certainly feels like I'd enjoy them more than the terrible feature-length films. Minion Scouts is a decent short film. That's somewhat big of me to acknowledge that. I know I've criticized the minions harshly (appropriately), but I also recognize when they do something decent (but not quite good).
