Review:
Tim: This short MGM cartoon features a little mouse named Little Cheeser, who is inspired by his friends to build a rocket ship and travel to the moon, which is made of cheese. That about sums up the movie. The short is okay, if you can look past the ridiculous lack of science involved in it. I wasn't familiar with Little Cheeser before this short film, and after watching it, I kind of understand why. He's not nearly as interesting as some of the more famous cartoon characters.
The main sequences involve building a rocket ship and flying to the moon. The building the ship scene is interesting because of the clever ways you see mice building a rocket ship. It's especially clever to see all the different tools they use. These scenes use repetitive animation, but they get the point across. The climax of the film involves the rocket launching from earth (propelled by fireworks, TNT, etc). The trip would make any scientific minded person cringe, as they somehow pass by a planet (which isn't on the way to the moon) and the Milky Way (which is "cleverly" made of milk bottles). I suppose kids will find this funny, but to any intelligent adult, seems pretty silly- the Earth and the Moon are in the Milky Way, you wouldn't pass through it on the way to the moon. The scenes on the Moon are fine- it's made of cheese, basically. The return home is a little challenging. The short ends in somewhat disappointing fashion, but it does kind of make the whole thing make more sense.
I really don't have much more to say about this. It's interesting to see an animated short from 1937, but I can't say this film (which was my first exposure to Little Cheeser) made me a fan.
