Review:
Tim: I have to say, I'm not overly impressed with Family Movie Night: Little Red Bronana Bread. It feels like a completely unnecessary short, designed out of necessity to add additional content to the DVD release of The Croods: A New Age. It really adds nothing to the overall story. It's imminently skippable. It's not bad and it's a short four minutes. However, it simply never gives us a reason for it to exist.
The short was obviously made on a shoestring budget. The animation is different from the main movie, just done in shadow puppet style. This is explained within the context of the film, but it feels like a financial decision more than anything. I suppose there's some value in seeing these characters depicted in a totally different animation style, but it can't quite shake the feeling that it was done primarily for budgetary reasons.
The story itself is pretty bland. It's logically connected to some elements of the main story, so it more-or-less makes sense. It's simply an area that didn't need to be expanded. We didn't need to see how these two families do movie night and we didn't need a story that genuinely feels like it was written by teenagers without a great deal of talent. Again, nothing is outrageously bad here, but it feels like a massive step down in quality from the actual movie. I know this was done for DVD content, but I wish Dreamworks cared a bit more about putting a solid foot forward (or, you know, just not doing it).
I could keep going, but I think I made my point clear. This short is best missed, but if you do commit, at least you're only wasting 4 minutes of your life.
