Review:

Tim: I can't say I was a big fan of Dug. I liked Up well enough, but I wasn't as enamored with it as many critics. The comic support dog was okay, but not someone I was overly interested in learning more about.

This might be due to how he was introduced and treated in Up. Not that I have a clear memory of this, but he talks about being on a special mission when introduced to the characters, and then never mentions it again. That's kind of a weird way to handle the character and likely contributed to my lack of enthusiasm for him. So, in that light, that's a knock on Up. I suppose it's also a plus for Dug's Special Mission, because we get to learn what that special mission was. I suppose that's pretty cool.

I wouldn't say I especially loved his mission, but it's humorous. The three other dogs continually give Dug "special missions" meant to get the bumbling pup out of their way. Every single time, it backfires on the dogs, much to their chagrin. It's kind of funny to watch their plans continuously going wrong. The story is fairly simple in that regard. It does move pretty quickly. I wouldn't say this is a brilliant short by any stretch, but it provides the tiniest bit of extra character backstory, so it decent in that regard.

Dug's Special Mission is an easily skippable short. You really don't need to see the events of this film. If you loved Up, you will probably enjoy this little, deeper look into Dug. Otherwise, you can spend 5 minutes in a more productive manner.
