Review:
Tim: I actually really enjoyed this movie. I was fairly disappointed in the over-the-top, ridiculous Moonraker. This film scales back the action and the technological gimmicks, giving us instead a fairly straightforward action movie. This is much closer to the true James Bond movies. This film features some incredible action sequences, suspenseful moments, and general 007 fun. This is a very good entry into the Bond franchise.
Roger Moore will never be as good as Sean Connery, but he really worked hard to shore up his 007 resume. He was part of some quite enjoyable Bond movies, and I believe he should be given his due. While his performance occasionally makes you long for Connery, Moore is still a decent Bond.
What I missed from this film is that Bond didn't have any really great quips. Part of the strength of the Bond movies are Bond's hilarious one-liners. Those were mostly absent here. The Bond girls are fairly decent, and the supporting cast is actually very strong. Bond is surrounded by some fascinating characters, which makes the entire film that much better.
Although this movie didn't have any particularly memorable scenes, there are some fairly strong ones. The underwater submarine sequences are decent, but a bit hard-to-believe. The film's most iconic moments have to be Bond scaling a cliff to infiltrate a mountaintop fortress.
While For Your Eyes Only isn't one of the top tier Bond movies, it still marks a decidedly strong improvement over the previous film. I enjoyed this movie, and it made me once again excited about the Bond franchise.
