Review:

Tim: This is a movie that I really, really liked, wanted to love, but just couldn't. David Fincher does an absolutely fabulous job of directing this movie. It moves at a brisk but perfect pace- it never feels slow or rushed. It is a long movie, but its pacing keeps us interested every moment. The movie is balanced beautifully- from the suspenseful moments to the humorous, to the dramatic- the movie is a wonder to watch.

The cast is ideal. Jake Gyllenhaal gives a mesmerizing performance that was overlooked by critics. He latches onto the paranoia and the obsession of discovering the killer, and never lets go. Robert Downey, Jr. brings a light touch but also some incredibly dramatic moments as well. He's enjoyable every second he's on screen. Mark Ruffalo likewise gives a terrific performance, interacting with the two other stars in very different but excellent ways. The supporting cast is terrific as well, with Anthony Edwards, Elias Koteas, Donal Logue, and Brian Cox all providing excellent support as well.

Zodiac is such an interesting film because it is a serial killer movie unlike any serial killer movie you've ever seen. This is firmly grounded in reality-and that is a welcome departure from many similar films. It is wholly focused on telling its story, never once trying to be something it isn't. This is an unconventional film, not the type we are used to seeing. That is refreshing, and it balances its realistic focus while never sacrificing its entertainment value. It is a long movie, and I wish there had been a greater payoff at the end (you can't rewrite history, however). Still, the excellent performances make up for any flaws. This is a very entertaining movie.
