Review:

Tim: I admit I wasn't exactly excited about this movie. It looked like a Liar Liar rip off (with "yes" replacing the "truth"). Plus, I can't remember the last time Jim Carrey made a really funny movie. Now, I am glad to say that I was wrong. This movie stands on its own two feet, manages some truly hilarious moments, and best of all, has an honestly good message about life. This comedy isn't the most memorable, amazing movie, but it is a solid film that works. I enjoyed it, which is more than I can say about many of Carrey's previous films.

The movie primarily works because of the movie's writing. There are some legitimately funny situations the characters find themselves in, and it all centers around the concept of saying "yes" to everything. I found myself laughing out loud, which was a refreshing change from most so-called "comedies." There were a few scenes I loved. I absolutely loved the Third Eye Blind "Jumper" scene- Carrey did this beautifully. The movie also works because it touches on the freedom that saying yes can bring to a life. I don't recommend anyone say yes to everything, but we could all embrace life a little bit more, take some chances, even if we are afraid or self-conscious. That is a beautiful message and this movie manages to get that across in an entertaining way.

Jim Carrey does exceptional work here. This movie reminded me of when he used to be the funniest man in America (it feels like a long time ago). He is more reserved than many of his films, but he also has some opportunities to go all out in his traditional zany, high-energy fashion. I thought this balance worked very well. I can't imagine another actor giving as good of a performance as Carrey here- he was really the only actor that could have pulled this off as wonderfully as he did. I also liked Zooey Deschanel. I am a fan of her, although I always find myself wishing she would give a little more. Her role here isn't very flashy or glamorous, but she gives it quite a bit of effort, and I found myself enjoying her performance. I also liked the additional of the suddenly-hot (in a career success sense) Bradley Cooper. He is good in his supporting role.

Yes Man is not the type of movie that will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. I can think of dozens of funnier movies. However, I am not trying to belittle its charm or its appeal. It is funny, entertaining, and while not one of the best movies of the year, I would have to call this movie a success. I enjoyed it far more than I expected I would, I was emotionally impacted by the story, and I paused for a moment to reconsider the decisions I make in my own life. In that aspect, the movie succeeds in every endeavor it pursues. I liked this movie and it is surprisingly effective in every way.
