Summary: Follows the story of a writer (Michael Douglas) and the upheaval in his life- his wife has left him, his girlfriend (Frances McDormand) is pregnant, trying to keep it a secret from her husband, his student (Tobey Maguire) comes to him for help and guidance, another student (Katie Holmes) is trying to get too close to him, and his publisher (Robert Downey, Jr.) has just arrived to see the status of his book (which isn't finished).

Review:

Tim: This is a pretty good movie. It tells an interesting story with interesting characters. Probably the least exciting part of the movie for me was the references to drugs and homosexuality. But, that's just the kind of film this is.

Michael Douglas gives a tremendous performance. He is truly a great actor, and shines in this somewhat different role. He is powerfully dramatic at times, but also just hilarious. He is supported by a good cast. Robert Downey, Jr. is a lot funnier than I thought he would be. He is very good in this film and adds a lot with his chemistry between Douglas and Maguire. Tobey Maguire has a difficult performance, but does it almost with ease. He is a good dramatic actor and is decent here. Katie Holmes gives a small but very good performance. Frances McDormand seems uninspired throughout the film. I believe she can act better, but perhaps it was the part or something else, but she's forgettable.

Wonder Boys is one of those films with an excellent mix of drama and comedy. It definitely has its dramatic moments, but more importantly, its funny. The dialogue is excellent throughout. Perhaps the funniest part of the movie is when the dog attacks Douglas and Maguire attempts to help him. Watch for this scene, because its great. Another good scene is when the two actors just mentioned go to Douglas' wife's house. While watching, I actually asked out loud, "Did Tobey Maguire just climb through a doggie door because Michael Douglas told him to?" Definitely funny stuff.

I recommend this film because its different, entertaining, and enjoyable. Some of the scenes can get a little strange, but all in all, its worth seeing.
