Review:

Tim: I must be getting senile in my old age, because inexplicably, I really liked this movie. I can't believe I did, because I should have railed against this movie. With a big sigh, I have to reluctantly admit I really did enjoy this movie. This should be impossible, because the whole concept is beyond ridiculous. This is the old Pretty Woman-in-reverse. However, despite the cliche-ridden plot, there is enough here to be enjoyable.

A great deal of credit should go to Debra Messing. This film depended on her being incredibly likeable, which she is. Her appeal covers up a lot of problems that otherwise would be even more apparent. Also giving an excellent peformance is Dermot Mulroney. His job really came down to being as charismatic and suave as possible. He is surprisingly enjoyable on screen. He's playing a male escort, but I just thoroughly enjoyed his performance. He and Messing interact extremely well, and their relationship is what makes this movie work.

I remember, immediately after seeing this movie, I was talking to a friend and I expressed how shocked I was that i really, really liked this film. I was able to look past the cliches, the ridiculous plot, and some occasionally questionable dialogue. I found a funny movie (there are some hilarious scenes) that was engrossing, and very interesting to watch. Occasionally I will come across a film that seems doomed to fail, but sets out with a simple mission, and executes faithfully on that mission. This movie isn't trying to change the world. It is just trying to give us a romantic comedy, and entertain us for a couple hours. I was indeed entertained with this lighthearted film, and if you don't get bogged down in the film's flaws, you will be, too.
