Review:
Tim: Critics absolutely roasted this big budget(at the time, it was the most expensive movie ever made) film, and they completely hated it. While this movie is pretty bad, it is by no means as bad as they claimed it was. Yes, the film is bloated. Yes, the dialogue is very often cheesy, and some of the scenes are absurd. The film is greatly flawed. However, there is also something admirable about such a monumental effort. It is a borderline monumental failure, but it was an impressive attempt at such a wide-sweeping, epic film.
Kevin Costner is interesting as the Mariner. He has some great moments, and he has some cringe-inducing ones. I can't think of another actor who would have taken the role, so I appreciate him giving the film his all. Jeanne Tripplehorn has an absolutely terrible character to deal with, awful dialogue, and yet, somehow, she is incredibly likeable in the role. How she manages to pull this off is amazing. Dennis Hopper is a bit too over-the-top, but he's also cold-hearted and evil. He pretty much fits in with the rest of the movie.
Waterworld is a bloated, failed epic, but there's something fascinating in watching someone reach for the stars and fall on their face. This isn't as bad as people say it is, but the movie isn't very good. It does enough right to keep you interested, but it's still a relief when its over (and, I highly recommend staying away from the Special Edition, which adds another 30 minutes to the already too long film.
