Review:

Tim: I actually thought for a few moments that I might be able to like this movie. I was able to look past many of the flaws of movies like Resident Evil and Aeon Flux, so why not another science fiction action movie starring a heroine? Sadly, this movie is an absolute disaster in every sense of the world. This movie is beyond awful. The list of flaws is so long that I have trouble even knowing where to begin.

I suppose I'll start with the cast. Milla Jovovich has experience in these types of films, from her Resident Evil trilogy. This character, however, is so ridiculous and hard to believe that she just comes across as silly and stupid. I didn't enjoy a second of her on screen. The rest of the cast is completely forgettable, although Cameron Bright and William Fichtner have a few decent moments.

Director Kurt Wimmer was going for a comic book like feel to the movie. There are certain scenes where the special effects give the movie an interesting look, but not nearly enough money was spent on these, so it appears cheap. Instead of bringing you into this world, it keeps it at a distance because you can recognize the low quality of the special effects.

Perhaps the film's biggest flaw is that the whole ridiculous plot is just in place to move you from fight scene to fight scene. These scenes usually involve Jovovich battling overwhelming odds while showing off as much of her body as possible, and defeating her opponents with the slightest of ease. I'm not sure why these scenes were supposed to be entertaining, but they quickly became tiresome. The plot is a recycled mess of better films, and this movie adds nothing new. It is nearly impossible to care about anything happening. The movie feels like bad dream from someone who spent all day watching sci-fi movies and reading comic books. Several scenes are nearly incomprehensible.

Ultraviolet has almost no redeeming qualities. It is an awful movie that I hope disappears quickly from my conscious. I did try to like it, but it is such a putrid piece of filmmaking that I couldn't muster up any at all.
