Summary: During World War II, a group of United States submariners must board a demobilized German U-boat to retreive an enigma code machine. While in the German sub, their own submarine is destroyed, so they must repair the German sub and escape from the waters undetected.

Review:

Tim: You won't have any fingernails left after watching this movie. Submarine movies are generally suspenseful, but nothing will prepare you for the intensity of U-571. I'm sweating just thinking about it.

The crew faces nearly insurmountable odds as everything that can go wrong seemingly does. They go from one death-defying situation to another, leaving us gasping for air. Watch especially for the nerveracking dive to over 200 metres- it is incredible.

The cast is great. Matthew McConaughy is excellent in the lead role. Harvey Keitel adds a good performance as always. I'm not sure why Jon Bon Jovi is in the film, but he's not too bad, either.

This is a story of courage, fortitude, and doing one's duty no matter the consequences. Although the story is fictional, there really were numerous accounts of heroism during World War II involving sailors risking their lives to capture the German coding machines.

U-571 defines the suspenseful genre, and makes for a very good war movie, as well.
