Summary: A marshal (James Stewart) is asked to rescue several white captives long held by an Indian tribe. He is in the deal for purely monetary reasons, but soon finds himself pulled in for loftier reasons as well.
Review:
Tim: Although this isn't one of James Stewart's best westerns, it still ranks fairly high up there. Here, he plays a much colder and more cycnical man than some of his more idealistic roles. Here, he is a man seemingly past the point of fighting for ideals and more focused on money.
John Ford directs an impressive movie, always in control of what is happening on screen. The movie unfolds slowly, rising and falling at all the right times. This is a very enjoyable movie.
This movie should appeal to both James Stewart fans and Western fans in general. Stewart is responsible for some truly excellent Westerns over the years, and this is another impressive entry. I'd recommend this movie because even though Stewart made quite a few different Westerns, this one is quite unlike many of the others. It's unique qualities make it stand out among Stewart's films and is very much worth your time.
