Review:
Tim: Tomcats is a pretty bad movie, but I found myself slightly more entertained than I had expected. The movie is just as vulgar and stupid as you might expect, but there's a goofy, heartwarming story buried deep beneath. Once again, I want to clarify that this is not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination. I've seen far worse, though.
The movie basically boils down to a pretty predictable plot. A guy tries to get his friend to marry a girl so he can win some serious money, but he ends up falling for the girl himself. This is a pretty simple plot, so it's easy to follow, but it's just so incredibly obvious. It's one of dozens of instances of lazy writing. Still, it can be fun to sit back and enjoy a film that you've never seen before, but can predict exactly how it will end.
Jerry O'Connell is fine in the lead role. He's certainly not a good actor at all, but you have to appreciate how into the role he gets. From his performance, you never get the impression that he realizes what a piece of trash the whole movie is. I suppose you have to respect that. Shannon Elizabeth is completely forgettable in a role that shows off her poor, poor acting skills. She really just has no acting talent at all. I did like Jake Busey in his role. He's not a great actor, either, but he certainly gives an energetic performance. It was fun to watch. Horatio Sanz and Jaime Pressly were fine, although it was hard to believe them as a couple.
While the expectations for this movie are quite low already, there are a few humorous moments throughout the film. I thought it was funny how the Vegas guys kept coming to O'Connell's house and taking his stuff, and his nonchalant attitude toward them. The librarian scene was humorous, in a way. Not every scene was great, though. The testicle scene was disgusting and not very funny at all. There were just far too many unfunny scenes throughout the film. This definitely hurts the movie.
In the grand scheme of things, Tomcats is a completely generic, forgettable movie. There's just not enough here in the story or with the characters to remain in our memories. It's just a stupid, moronic movie. If you are in the mood for mindless entertainment that might generate a few cheap laughs, you can certainly do worse than this film. However, you literally have thousands of better options. I didn't hate this movie, because it is hard to hate something so dumb, but it really isn't a very good movie at all.
