Review:

Tim: This is an interesting but somewhat convoluted story about political dealings between two men that could have disastrous consequences for Panama. The story moves quickly and occasionally get confusing.

The film works well because of the performances of Geoffrey Rush and Pierce Brosnan. Rush is outstanding as the titular character. He gives such an emotional and powerful performance, often using the most subtle mannerisms to convey such sincerity. He is amazing to watch. Brosnan is completely sinister and yet devilishly charming. He seems to really enjoy the role. Brendan Gleeson is good as well, in a somewhat unexpected role. This film is very character driven, and these great performances are of the utmost importance.

The Tailor of Panama is a little anticlimactic. There are no distinctions between heroes and villains. In Panama, everyone seems innocent at the same time they appear guilty. This makes it difficult for us to know whom we're rooting for in the movie.

It is interesting to see how various parties manipulate the truth to increase the benefits to themselves. This game is what creates all the drama and tension in the film. Combining this element with some excellent performances and you have an exciting and intriguing film to enjoy. However, this is one of those movies that a one-time viewing is enough.
