Review:
Tim: Stanley Kubrick's science fiction masterpiece is something to behold. From the opening, unforgettable theme song to the mindblowing finale, this is not the type of film you see every day. Kubrick tells his story slowly, reveling in every amazing detail. This film epitomizes the visually focused type of work that Kubrick often excells in (you'll notice how little dialogue the film contains).
This movie has its remarkable moments- from the dawn of man to HAL 9000 and the immortal line, "Open the pod bay doors, HAL." This movie is a marvel to watch.
Kubrick's attention to deail is fascinating to see, although it also tends to detract from the film at various places. For example, when a spaceship takes seemingly an hour to get where it is going, what starts out as wonder and awe becomes boredom. Kubrick is very ambiguous throughtout the movie which works in some places and in others, does not.
Whatever your take on this movie (and I imagine some unrefined modern viewers will be bored), this much is undeniable- 2001: A Space Odyssey is a beautiful film. Kubrick put his heart and soul into every frame, and it shows.
This is the definitive science fiction movie. Every movie lover needs to see this at least once- like so many great films, it is simply required viewing.
