Review:
Tim: I was supremely excited about this movie. It looked amazing, and right up my alley. The movie itself is exciting, unconventional, and beautiful to look at. However, I just couldn't get myself to love this movie. I really, really like it, but I wish it had been better.
The cast is excellent. I am a huge fan of Chris Evans, and I really enjoyed seeing him here. Cillian Murphy is quite good as well. I'm not a huge fan of him, but he is usually quite good, and he continues that tradition here. The rest of the cast is decent, but no one is spectacular.
The scenes of the space ship and the sun are amazing. There are a few scenes that are truly jaw-dropping. These are among the best moments of the film. Director Danny Boyle really did an excellent job with the special effects, and they pull you into the story (instead of pushing you out). There are a few scenes that will stay with me, they were that amazing.
My criticisms of the film come after the first 45 minutes or so. The movie switches into more of a sci-fi horror role. This is fine, and I enjoyed it, but I thought these scenes needed to be a little more original and frightening. I was occasionally reminded of films like Event Horizon, which is not a film you want to be compared to.
Despite a few shortcomings, Sunshine is still the type of movie that is just fun, cool, and enjoyable. It is different enough to stand out in the genre, and a movie that I will continue to think of fondly.
