Review:
Tim: This is a pretty good spoof of the whole science fiction genre of films. TO be more accurate, it is a spoof of the Star Wars films, with a few jokes thrown in about Alien, Planet of the Apes, and Star Trek. The film spoofs all of these in excellent fashion- Pizza the Hut and Dark Helmet are especially funny.
However, the film's funniest moments come from the mind of Mel Brooks. The "asshole" scene was the highlight of the film for me. Although everyone gives good performances, Rick Moranis steals the show. He is absolutely hilarious and gets the lion's share of the best lines. Mel Brooks adds in his usual supporting performance as some authority figure or another. He is also quite funny as Yogurt.
This film sadly isn't incredibly funny. Brooks achieved a better film with Blazing Saddles and some of his other movies. This one is entertaining and fun to watch, but doesn't make you laugh as much as it needs to. There are long stretches of boredom.
Science Fiction fans should at least enjoy this movie because of how well it lampoons the classic icons of the genre. Though the film might be incredibly funny, it accomplishes its goal to ridicule characters and events we're all familiar with. The film is lighthearted fun- may the Schwartz be with you.
