Summary: After a woman (Julia Roberts) discovers her husband (Dennis Quaid) has been cheating on her, she finds her life turned upside down. Her father (Robert Duvall) disapproves of her actions and her refusal to make amends with her husband causes problems in the relationships of everyone around her.
Review:
Tim: This is very much a girls' movie. It features a woman coping with her cheating husband and how this effects her entire family. To be more girly, her whole family works on a horse farm and loves to ride horses. All this aside, there are quite a few positives to be happy about.
Julia Roberts is good in the starring role. I don't believe it is close to her best performance, but entertaining none the less. Dennis Quaid is fun to watch in an unglamorous role. Kyra Sedgwick steals the show in the best performance I've seen from her. She has some incredible lines (including the movie's most inappropriate one) and pretty much all of the funniest scenes of the film. I wouldn't have liked this movie very much if it wasn't for her. The rest of the cast is decent.
Everything in this movie feels a bit melodramatic. I know that Roberts would have been devestated when she learned that Quaid had been cheating on her, but even still, the events that follow are still a bit hard to swallow. There are a few bright and brilliant moments, but most of the film is riddled with cliches and the usual girl-film substance.
A vast majority of the film is regurgitated from other movies. It is kind of ironic, but this film offers very little worth talking about. I suppose it's not a bad movie, but weak, cold, and a little pompous.
