Review:
Tim: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a visually stunning but otherwise inferior movie. Every frame of the film draws us in with a look that we are not used to seeing. The entire film has a feeling of something old, yet new. It is quite interesting to watch.
Unfortunately, the film is pretty unoriginal and "borrows" from a ton of other action and science fiction movies. Several scenes seem to be copied right out of classic, most notably Return of the Jedi near the end.
This movie is fun in its almost throwback, retro feel. This is the movie's strongest feature. For the first 45 minutes or so, we are completely engrossed in the action packed mystery. However, as the plot unravels, the film becomes more absurd and less believable.
Jude Law is actually pretty cool and likeable as Sky Captain. He makes a good hero. Gwyneth Paltrow is perfect as the textbook nosey reporter. Angelina Jolie is wasted and has too little screen time to make any difference at all. Giovanni Ribisi is decent, but a little unlikeable.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow has nice special effects and an interesting feel to it, but the movie fails to be original in its plot. It is great to look at, but ultimately disappoints quite severely.
