Summary: Two silent films stars, Don (Gene Kelly) and Linda (Jean Hagen) are trying to make the transition to "talkie" motion pictures. While Don can sing, Linda is horrible. A solution arises when Don's new flame (Debbie Reynolds) agrees to secretly provide the voice for the untalented actress. This works fine until Linda's ego threatens to destroy everything.
Review:
Tim: This is easily the greatest Hollywood musical ever made. It features the most elaborate dance sequences ever filmed up to that time. They are still remarkable today.
Donald O'Connor gives a terrific performance. His dance numbers are physical and hilarious. The "Make 'Em Laugh" sequences needs to be seen to be believed.
The "Singin' in the Rain" song and dance number is a classic. It is amazing to watch. All musical numbers should be like this one. You simply need to see this classic scene in the context of the entire film.
Gene Kelly is really good. He sings and dances beautifully. He doesn't quite feel perfect for the part, but he pulls it off. Debbie Reynolds is excellent and very fun to watch. She has so much spark and energy- she's just fantastic.
Singin' in the Rain is a classic American film, ranked 10th on the Greatest American Movies list. It is one of (if not the) greatest musical ever made and is part of the musical heritage that you simply need to be apart of. See this movie even if you don't like musicals. It might just change your mind.
