Summary: Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) return from their Honeymoon and are surprised to find a letter from Fiona's parents (John Cleese, Julie Andrews), inviting their daughter and her husband to visit them in the Kingdom of Far, Far, Away. Shrek reluctantly agrees, and he, Fiona, and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) set out to meet her parents. There, her father is unaccepting of his daughter marrying an ogre, so he hires Puss-in-Boots (Antonio Banderas) to kill him. Shrek then must deal with his own shortcomings, while trying to stop an evil plot by the Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders) to make Fiona marry her son, Prince Charming (Rupert Everett).

Review:

Tim: Shrek 2 is a very funny sequel, but not quite as good as the original. The main problem with this movie is the storyline isn't as clear and exciting as the first one. It is very complicated. You have this complex story about Fiona's parents hating Shrek and Shrek trying to change himself for Fiona. You have a whole sub-storyline about the Fairy Godmother and Prince Charming (which is not interesting at all and makes for the worst and most boring scenes of the film). In addition, the humor is not as crisp and fresh as it was in the original.

The one aspect that saves this movie from being a disappointment is Antonio Banderas as Puss-in-Boots. This is one of the greatest characters in cartoon history. Every scene he is in is automatically more enjoyable. It was a stroke of genius for Banderas to spoof his Zorro character.

The funniest scenes of the film are with the Gingerbread Man and Pinocchio. The "Mission Impossible" rescue scene is one of the most hilarious I've ever seen.

Despite its shortcomings, Shrek 2 is still better than most of the animated features churned out of Hollywood. It is enjoyable and a very fun film. Kids will love it, and if you try not to think about its weaknesses, you will, too.
