Summary:An older detective (Morgan Freeman) about to retire reluctantly teams up with a young hotshot (Brad Pitt) to catch a killer who selects his victims according to the seven deadly sins- Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Pride, Envy, Lust, and Wrath. The killer is patient, methodical, and seemingly impossible to catch.
Review:
Tim: This is about as creepy and as chilling as a thriller gets. Seven is an excellent movie, although it follows a somewhat unoriginal plot. Of course, in a cop movie, you have the older, wiser detective teamed up with the young, idealistic, naive cop. However, this film puts Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt into those roles. That is excellent casting, my friend. The film also features a crazy madman who taunts the detectives. However, Seven goes to Kevin Spacey for that role, another brilliant move. Rounding out the cast are Gwyneth Paltrow and Richard Roundtree (shut yo mouth!)
Besides the cast, the film takes you on a twisting and turning ride as the detectives try to uncover the plot of a killer who seems too intelligent to be caught. The film is pretty gruesome, and many parts will make you want to shut your eyes, but it is definitely worth viewing. This killer isn't just some crazy wacko that you might find in many cop action/dramas. He follows a precise pattern- selecting and killing victims according to the seven deadly sins. Brilliant.
Most of the publicity surrounding this film compared to to The Silence of the Lambs. That is somewhat appropriate, because they do parallel each other. It's quite a feat to compare these two movies. However, Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt definitely can rival Jodie Foster. Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector is hard to tops, although casting Kevin Spacey was definitely a move in the right direction. In the end, it doesn't matter which film you like better, because they are both tremendous films.
Perhaps the best and longest lasting aspect of Seven is the surprise ending. Though somewhat gruesome, it leaves the audience realizing the sheer intelligence and borderline brilliance of this film. I definitely recommend seeing this movie.
