Summary: New Yorker Jonathan (John Cusack) meets a beautiful but mysterious British woman, Sara (Kate Beckinsale) one night in the city. They hit it off, but both are already taken. In a playful test of fate, Sara writes her name and number in a book and sells it to a bookstore, and Jonathan writes his name and number on a five dollar bill. Sara leaves, saying that if they are meant to be together, they will find the book and the five dollar bill. Years later, as both are about to be married, their thoughts return to the one perfect night, and fate starts to work its magic.
Review:
Tim: This movie struck me as a winner the first time I saw a trailer advertising it. This romantic comedy stars John Cusack and Kate Beckisnale. John Cusack is one of my all time favorite actors. I can't tell you exactly what I like about him so much, but just that he seems real- his performances aren't forced or phony. But anyway, he is an amazing actor, and his chemistry with the very beautiful and talented Kate Beckinsale really makes the film.
Serendipity centers around the belief that fate plays a role in everyone's life- not that everything is predestined, but that fate gives you clues as to what you are supposed to do- someone in the film makes the metaphor that life is a stage, and fate is the stage directions for the actors. Around this belief the producers wrap a somewhat predictable yet charming story.
As far as romantic comedies go, this one puts a somewhat different twist on the same old genre. I recommend seeing this film.
