Review:
Tim: This is in many ways a period piece. Seabiscuit is not just about a horse or a person or a race. It is about a time. For that reason, you have the occasional narration throughout the film, which really unites the time and the story. This film succeeds in many ways because it puts the characters and events in a time period that highlights both and brings out the best in both. This technique makes the film come alive. It is important to note that this movie isn't just about a person or a horse. It's about a period in our history.
Also, the film gains some credibility and importance because it is a true story. The true story of Seabiscuit is remarkable, which greatly helps the movie. Also helping out the film are the tremendous performances all around. Tobey Maguire gives a great performance. He is an impressive actor. Jeff Bridges is tremendous as well. Chris Cooper, whom I never really liked until this film, is great as well. William H. Macy in a smaller role is hilarious and has some amazingly funny lines. These three men are perfect for their parts. The cast really makes this movie come alive.
This film really shows what Seabiscuit did for people. This is a story of hope, redemption, and success. It is a movie about second chances. That is what Seabiscuit did for the people during his run in the early 1900s and that is what Seabiscuit shows us today. This is a really good film.
