Review:

Tim: I love the idea of the Fast and the Furious franchise putting out short films to connect the movies together. Turbo Charged Prelude connects the original movie to 2 Fast 2 Furious. The idea is wonderful, the execution is slightly lacking.

Now, again, I really appreciate that this film was made. It doesn't reveal anything shocking or unexpected, but watching it in the context of the first and second film does help bridge the gap of how Brian ended up in Miami for the second film. While nothing amazing happens, it does fill in some holes, so that is appreciated.

The issue I had with the short film is that it's just so amateurish. A lot of that has to do with the direction. The quick cuts certainly didn't help. The quality of the short felt like it was a guy who filmed it himself and edited it in his basement. I can't imagine what the budget was (it had to be pretty minuscule), but the short needed a few more dollars to improve the look of it. The F&F franchise spends money to make the movies look slick, so a bit more was needed here.

As you might expect, Turbo Charged Prelude isn't a must-see. You could easily watch the first and second movie and it would all make sense. You lose nothing by watching this short. If you are a huge fan of the franchise, or just curious (like me), you do get to see what happened to one of the main characters in between films. While the execution wasn't brilliant, I still wish more franchises would follow this path.
