Review:

Tim: I really wasn't a big fan of Trolls, so you'd expect me to happily miss a television short film. However, my son is a big fan of Poppy and Branch, and so, here we are. If you liked the original film, this short holiday film will be right up your alley. However, like the original film, it just felt like this one was short on humor and true entertainment. It was fine, but it was forgettable.

The story is pretty basic- Poppy and Branch visit the Bergens because they don't have holidays, and try to convince them to adopt some of them. The humor is that they have the most ridiculous holidays- and a lot of them. So, much of the film is the presentation of each troll holiday, which the Bergens understandably have no interest in. Towards the end of the film, we get some lessons about listening to your friends and prioritizing their emotions over your own hopes. It's fine, but it felt a little flimsy.

The short film does a good job aligning with the visual look and feel of the feature length film. It felt a bit smaller scale, as you would expect for a film like this. My son was somewhat engaged in the story, but it was obvious he wasn't riveted (and he's two). This film was missing a truly great song or truly funny moment. There was decent attempts at both, but nothing truly memorable.

The voice cast did a fine job continuing with these characters, but no one truly stood out. They were all good.

It certainly sounds like we'll be getting much more Trolls-related media in the coming years. I guess it could be worse, but I can't say I'm overly enthusiastic about that prospect.
