Review:
Tim: I've seen a few of these short films from the earliest days of American cinema. I have to say that Three American Beauties is not one of my favorites. We get the three images (and a fourth, which is a starry sky), and that's it. There's not much to this very short film.

The highlight of the film definitely has to be the colors, which pop out on the screen. These are certainly not natural colors, but it is their unnatural look and feel that makes them seem special. I suppose these would be considered some of the earliest "special effects." I've read that the hand tinting that went into the colors was pretty difficult (it had to be done to every frame), and the finished product is pretty impressive.

So, the main reason why this film is worth seeing is for the stark colors of each of the beauties. The red rose is unnaturally beautiful, which fades to a woman in a bright yellow dress holding a rose, before the American flag (the red and blue in the waving flag is pretty impressive) comes on screen. I suppose these are the three American beauties, but I didn't get the starry night at the end. Could that be considered a fourth beauty?

Besides the colors, there's not a whole lot to get excited about regarding Three American Beauties. It's an interesting little film, though.
