Review:

Tim: I wasn't a fan of The Secret Life of Pets or its sequel, so I can't say I was all that pumped to watch an additional short film. Fortunately, this short is only 4 minutes long. I guess it's okay, but the entire short is a daydream sequence, which makes all of it feel pretty pointless. I suppose you could claim it gives you more insight into Gidget's psyche, but I'm not sure that is a place we really needed to venture. The whole thing is just average, but at least it's over quickly.

The short was a little strange, having the antagonist be a mind-controlling flea. I watched this short right after finishing the second movie and my four year-old son wasn't very impressed with this. He was confused and perhaps a little intimidated by what he saw on screen. I liked that Gilbert Gottfried provided the voice of Infester, so that was a plus for the film.

Part of my issue with this film is that there's nothing in this story that suggests it needed to exist. It was made to accompany a film, and probably because other animation studios have done it. This film needed to start with a legitimately strong idea and it simply doesn't. Did we need to see the romantic fantasy of a dog? The answer to that question is, "Absolutely not." This is part of my ongoing frustrations with Illumination. It feels like most of what they do involves lowest common denominator thinking. This story allows the animators to have fun and create something that looks cool. It's much harder to generate authentic emotions or ideas, and that's why they are completely absent from this film.

I usually don't get too riled up with short films. This movie might not be good, but it lasts four minutes. Super Gidget doesn't add much to the story or characters, so this isn't a film you need to search out.
