Review:

Tim: Porky and Gabby is a 1937 Looney Tunes short featuring the famous Porky Pig and the significantly less famous Gabby Goat. The cartoon is only 7 minutes long, but there's at least a few things to unpackage.

The most intriguing is Gabby Goat- he was designed to be Porky's sidekick and serve as a foil to Porky's easygoing persona. Gabby is crabby and irritable. Apparently, the introduction of the new character didn't go over very well- people apparently weren't a big fan of Gabby's personality. I read that he only appeared in two other shorts. I find this the most memorable aspect of this short. Looney Tunes has all these famous, iconic characters, and then you see someone like Gabby- it's a reminder that every creation isn't a classic and sometimes, things just don't work. I didn't think Gabby was especially bad, but clearly, audience reaction ruined his chances of becoming iconic like Porky.

The short itself is fine, basically just featuring a series of mishaps as Porky and Gabby go on vacation. The animation was strong, but the film isn't overly funny. Some of the gags fell flat, others had been done before. Still, for 7 minutes, the short does enough to hold our attention.

I've seen a number of these early Looney Tunes shorts. I wouldn't say this one is one of the better or most memorable ones, but I loved seeing the failed attempt at a new character in Gabby. You can do worse than this film, but I wouldn't consider this a "must-see".
