Review:

Tim: Before watching this short, I really didn't know much about Ozzie Nelson. This short inspired me to do just a little research and I've found that Nelson is a pretty interesting guy. I had no idea he was Ricky Nelson's father, but that makes a lot of sense. This film is an interesting look at Nelson and his music.

This short film features four numbers, only one of which Nelson wrote. Two were orchestra pieces, which I thought were fine. It was fun seeing Ozzie doing his conductor thing. The real attraction for me, though, was the two interesting song numbers. The first one, entitled "Come On, Get Up" was pretty funny. Nelson is in bed and his girl is trying to get him up. They sing/talk in rhyme and it's very cute and entertaining. It's not especially brilliant, but it's a pleasant way to spend a few minutes. The last number, "The Mamas and the Moolah" was fine as well. It gave Ozzie a chance to do a little acting (he's not bad) and do some singing as well.

I don't have a ton of expertise about these short films in the 1940s, but it makes sense why Ozzie would do this. It gives he and his orchestra some exposure to film audiences and it allows him to show a playful side to himself.

In the end, this short film is worth seeing if you're an Ozzie Nelson fan. If you're a casual movie goer, it's pretty interesting to get a glimpse of this world, but it's not required viewing.
