Review:
Tim: I guess I'm really not a fan of Wes Anderson and his brand of comedy. I understand the complexities and different quality to his films, and I even understand why others like him. I respect his craft, but I don't think his movies are very funny.
The best part of this movie is that Anderson creates some zany and memorable characters. The cast is superb, and the actors really bring these characters to life. Gene Hackman is excellent as Royal. Anjelica Huston and Danny Glover are both decent, but are the weakest area of the film. Billy Murray has nothing to do, but it is good seeing him anyway. Gwyneth Paltrow is unlike her typical self, but mesmerizing in a sense. Luke Wilson is simply terrific. I really enjoy watching him on screen. Ben Stiller is decent, but occasionally annoying. Owen Wilson is good in his smaller role. Some of the best scenes are those between Luke and Owen Wilson. There aren't many, but they are very fun to watch.
The story and plot aren't very interesting. The dialogue is pretty crisp and well written, but we've come to expect that from Anderson. The worst part of the movie is that it really isn't funny at all. The only worthwhile reason to see this movie is to see a worthwhile cast handed interesting characters, and then going about with terrific performances. Just don't expect to laugh much.
