Review:
Tim: This might not be the best movie ever, but it is an entertaining throwback to the action heroes of old. It is this aspect of the film, as well as the lighthearted, fun appeal of the movie that makes it enjoyable. This movie is appealing because of its spirit and heart, which is rare in films today.
The cast is decent. Bill Campbell makes an adequate, heroic everyman, but he is not leading man material, and that is apparent. Jennifer Connolly is good but her performance leaves something to be desired. Timothy Dalton is charasmatic and makes a fun antagonist. Terry O'Quinn is good in a small supporting role as Howard Hughes.
The film is fairly entertaining. The special effects are quite weak and dated, but with a little imagination, it still works. There are some good scenes- watching Campbell learn how to control the rocket, the dinner sequence, and most especially the event on the dirigible at the film's climactic point.
The Rocketeer is a lightweight film, but still manages to be fairly entertaining. This movie came at a time before "superhero" films were wildly popular, or it might be better rememebered today. To be fair, the film is pretty ridiculous and has several lapses of sheer boredom. However, most of the film is fairly solid. You'll enjoy this film more if you go into it realizing that this si just a silly, non-serious action adventure film. Don't take it too seriously, and you'll find a fun, enjoyable film. The Rocketeer pays tribute to the 50s superheroes and is old fashioned entertainment.
