Review:

Tim: RoboCop sucks. That's the conclusion I've come to after watching this third film, by far the worst in the trilogy. Director Fred Dekker completely ruins anything good Paul Verhoeven might have created in the original film. Even worse, Dekker's trash movie tarnishes the memory of RoboCop. When I tried to think back to what I liked about the character, I couldn't come up with anything. That's how bad this film is- it reaches back through time to destroy any good memories we had about this franchise. It's truly an awful movie.

There's certainly lots of blame to go around. I have to start with the script, which is riddled with holes. There's so many gaps in logic and common sense that I nearly couldn't believe it. It got so bad that I started to not notice the errors and flaws in the film. I started to take all the coincidences for granted, and almost believed the rubbish I was watching. So much of this movie is complete, utter crap. There's no logical consistency, and characters say or do some of the stupidest things I've ever seen on film.

I'm not going to get too detailed here because it'll take me hours to cover all the flaws. I will point out a few big ones. I wasn't buying the little Asian girl genius who can reprogram these very complicated machines (occasionally remotely, which is impressive) in a little more than a few seconds. I've said it before- having little kids who can do extraordinary, crazy things in movies is never a good idea. This character ruined the movie by herself. We also have RoboCop utter some of the stupidest, lamest lines I've ever heard. I wanted to punch the writers in the face I was so angry at the awful dialogue in this movie. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

RoboCop himself might be the worst part of the whole film. He's lost whatever human qualities made him interesting in the first two movies (not a coincidence that Peter Weller smartly passed on this one). He is such a lame character here. He spends most of the movie walking around slowly, never really defending himself. It feels like in every film, he gets all busted up and is powerless. He just has to wait for someone else to fix him (how lame is that, by the way). In this film, he also appears top-heavy, as a strong breeze seems to be all that is necessary to knock him over. In this film, RoboCop is just so incredibly stupid. I hated the character (I think I liked him in the first two films, but honestly, I don't remember why).

The plot once again features a corrupt corporation, but at this point, I've completely stopped caring. I know that RoboCop flies in this movie, so that's something. The whole movie feels like it was created for the lowest common denominator audience- an audience filled with stupid people who don't care about reality or logic, as long as there's explosions and gunfights (made all the worse by the PG-13 rating).

This is a really, really bad movie. It starts off decently, and then gets progressively worse and worse. I was honestly going to give this movie a 5.5 at one point. But, with every pointless scenes, plot hole, awful line of dialogue, or reused moment, the rating dropped. It dropped to 4.5, then to 4, and finally to 3.5. I have no doubt had the movie gone on another 10 minutes, it would have dropped lower. Fred Dekker absolutely butchered this franchise, and it should be no surprise that he never directed another movie again. Thank God for that. What a sad end for a once-proud franchise.
