Review:

Tim: I have no explanation for my soft spot for these movies. I still wish they were as chilling as the video game was to play, but for some reason, I can forgive the movie for trading out suspense for action. I couldn’t bring myself to dislike the first two films, and I can’t do that here. This is not a great movie. It’s a middling little action/zombie film, but for some reason, it works. It never tries to launch itself into the upper echelons of the genre, it just tries to tell an interesting story.

The film has broadened the scope from the first two films. Here, we’re out and about in the world, mostly around Las Vegas. It is pretty fun to see Sin City covered in sand and swarming with zombies. The movie offers some memorable scenes, from the previously mentioned Las Vegas landscape to the swarming zombie birds, and the final battle at the fenced-in compound. These are all great fun, and fairly good action sequences.

Milla Jovovich has the Alice thing done. She never wows me in the role, but she’s believable. I feel no negativity toward her character or her performance, which is actually quite a positive in films like this. It was good seeing the addition of Ali Larter to the cast, and I enjoyed seeing Oded Fehr return. Even Mike Epps was not nearly as annoying as he was in the previous film.

Resident Evil: Extinction wraps up the trilogy nicely. It doesn’t do enough to separate itself from the first two films, but it doesn’t represent a drop in quality, either. I can’t believe I am saying this, but I wouldn’t mind a fourth entry in the franchise. Just to be safe, however, I’d prefer the trilogy end here, before it can lose any effectiveness. As it stands now, this is a decent trilogy that accomplishes what it sets out to do. That in itself deserves a certain level of respect.
