Summary:A woman (Bridget Fonda) with no future who is transformed into a deadly assassin.
Review:
Tim:This is a high concept action film that puts forth an excellent (if not original) premise- a woman about to be put to death is given another chance at life, if she agrees to work for the government as an assassin. This definitely has all the makings of an excellent thrill ride, although in this case, the movie fails to deliver.
The cast is all put in place to achieve the maximum amount of kick. Bridget Fonda is very good in the role, and is quite effective. She doesn't completely capture the role and make it her own, but she is fairly enjoyable to watch. Gabriel Byrne is always a solid actor, and he gives a good performance here. Anne Bancroft adds in a good but small supporting role.
The action is surprisingly weak. While there are a few interesting sequences, the majority of the film is slow and lackluster. The movie moves at a decent enough pace to keep us entertained, but fails in a number of areas. There was quite a bit of potential for some really great action scenes. The movie tries to find a balance between action and drama. In a reversal of the majority of action-dramas, this one gives too much drama and not enough action. There are several reasons for this, but among them is that this was too ambitious a project and the budget needed to be a little bigger.
Point of No Return will keep you somewhat interested throughout, and provide a few decent performances. Ultimately, the film borrows from so many better movies and doesn't offer anything new or unique. In this manner, the movie will be somewhat of a waste of time. If you watch it, don't expect anything new.
