Review:

Tim: Now, I loved, loved, loved Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It is one of my all time favorite movies. I loved it. So, to say I was looking forward to this sequel is an understatement. I was worried it might feature a decline in quality, but I also felt confident in director Gore Verbinski.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a good sequel. However, like so often happens, it isn't as good as the original. In fact, if not for a few impressive scenes, this film would have been even worse.

What saves this film is primarily the scenes with the Kraken. This scenes (especially in the movie theatre, but even on a television set) are jaw-dropping. This is just amazing to see. The second impressive scene involves the giant wheel with Sparrow, Will, and Norrington fighting. This is amazing because the camerawork is fantastic.

A big reason this film isn't as good is because the original was such a surprise. No one knew that Johnny Depp was going to give a classic, hilarious performance. This film focused too much on the character of Jack Sparrow, to the detriment of Will and Elizabeth. Davey Jones is a pretty impressive character, and Bill Nighy does a good job. The special effects are impressive here as well.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a very good movie compared to all the other movies out there, but compared to the original, this is a step down in quality. It is still pretty enjoyable, but the first flaws of the franchise began to creep in here.
