Review:

Tim: October Sky is an inspirational film that is more amazing because it is based on a true story. The movie itself isn't incredible in any sense- it is just an all around good film. Most movies are strong in some aspects and really weak in others. They level out to a pretty decent film. October Sky doesn't have such highs and lows- it isn't outstanding in one way and poor in another. It is just an interesting story told in a powerful and moving way.

Jake Gyllenhaal heads up the film, acting wonderfully. He should have a heck of a career if he keeps his head on straight. Laura Dern is inspirational as Gyllenhaal's teacher and mentor. Chris Cooper adds in a good performance as Gyllenhaal's father. He plays such an unlikeable character, but he does it so well that part of us can't hate him.

This movie is about one young man who had a dream and followed it- in the face of adversity, despite all those around him who did not believe in him. He fought against all those odds- that is where we find the inspiration here.

I want to comment on one specific scene. There is a touching father-son moment at the end of the film that by far evokes the strongest emotions from us. Watch for it, because it is powerful. October Sky is a small movie, but one done with intelligence and honor. It is very much worth your while to see it.
