Summary: Very loosely based on Homer's The Odyssey, three southern con men are on the run from the law, trying to find a great treasure buried where only he knows. Along the way, they face much adversity, including beautiful sirens and a one-eyed salesman (John Goodman). As the boys get closer to the treasure, a secret emerges that threatens to leave them as poor as they were when they began.
Review:
Tim: I found it so interesting that this film is "based" on Homer's The Odyssey. While watching it, you will see that the film is barely based on the former classic novel, but it is still interesting to see the parallels between the two stories. The film itself (in addition to having an amazing soundtrack) is quite interesting. In the Coens' brothers typical fashion, it is not the type of film you'd normally expect. You really need to see it to understand.
The cast is decent. Clooney gives his usual excellent performance and is quite likeable. The rest of the cast gives good but not superb performances. Goodman is pretty good in a small role, and Turturro and Nelson compliment Clooney wonderfully.
Pay attention to the music in this film. It plays a much more important role than in most movies you'd see. In that aspect, it is very good to get a freshing, different taste of filmmaking.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? has many twists and turns with surprises that constantly change the course of the film. This adds yet another excellent element to the movie. If for no other reason, I advise you to watch this flm because it is so different from your run-of-the-mill motion picture. I think you will like it because it is unique... unless you like the mainstream, normal films all the time. If you do, then you might hate it. But, true filmlovers are in the first group, and I think thats where you are, too.
