Review:
Tim: Now and Then is very good for a girl movie (and make no mistake about it, this is a girl's movie). It is also a pretty decent coming-of-age story.
I really like the subplot of young Johnny's death and the four girls' search for the truth. It adds an element of mystery and suspense into what could have been a boring, slow film.
It is also a very well done teen movie that has a number of life lessons that teenage girls could really benefit from.
I like having a group of well known actors as the grown up girls. However, their performances are all not very spectacular. Only Demi Moore manages to give a decent performance. The young actors playing the children all do a very good job. To round out the cast, the film has a great supporting staff, including Hank Azaria in a small role and a cameo by Brendan Fraser.
Now and Then is not without its faults, but it is a movie by women for women and girls, and not enough of these movies are made in Hollywood. This is at least a decent showing.
