Review:

Tim: Sometimes I am such a sucker for movies. This movie couldn’t have been nearly as enjoyable as I thought it was, but I found myself entertained despite all effort to the contrary. Now, certainly, there are many, many downsides. Wanda Sykes and Rainn Wilson are both completely worthless (okay, Wilson is just mostly worthless) in the film. Eddie Izzard has a few decent moments, but is mostly disappointing. Even Uma Thurman isn’t at her best here. She certainly gives a better performance than the supporting cast, but not as strong as it could have been.

I enjoyed this movie primarily for two reasons. First, is Luke Wilson. Despite his insistence on making some truly bad movies, I just can’t not like the guy. He is fun to watch, and I thoroughly enjoyed him here. Secondly, is Anna Faris. I’ve been waiting for her to get a decent role (this isn’t it, but it’s a step in the right direction). She’s wonderful in her role, and so good on screen. She and Luke Wilson have a great deal of chemistry together.

It is also quite fun seeing Wilson taunted and sabotaged by his ex-girlfriend, who happens to be a superhero. This puts an interesting spin on the superhero genre of film, and I very much enjoyed it. There are some really great scenes (the shark throwing one is spectacular), and enough good comedy to cause anyone to laugh. Anyone who’s ever been through a bad breakup that just wouldn’t end should find enough here to relate to.

The film ultimately falls apart as it nears its conclusion (why are film endings so hard to do? That is the point when the movie all seems to go to hell) and we’re left wishing it could have wrapped things up a bit better. Yes, this is a silly movie, but there’s a certain amount of charm that allows it to be enjoyable. I liked it, and I believe fans of superhero movies will find enough here to be entertained.
