Review:
Tim: Steven Spielberg is an accomplished filmmaker, and when he sets out to make a serious, important film (see Schindler's List), he does a thorough job. The story he tells here is dark, controversial, and carries a great deal of importance in the state the current world is in. Spielberg is such a great filmmaker because he supplants his lighter fare with more serious films, like Munich.
Spielberg made an outstanding choice in casting Eric Bana as his lead. Bana has been nothing short of outstanding thus far in his young career. He has the talent to be one of the best actors in Hollywood, and it is films and performances live this that will get him there. The supporting cast is fairly good. Daniel Craig doesn't make much of an impact, but it seems like his effectiveness in movies will increase once he explodes on screen as the new 007. Geoffrey Rush adds in a small but decent performance. The rest of the cast is comprised of strong role players.
Munich is so effective because it depicts the insanity and evil that is terrorism, then shows good men seeking revenge for that evil, but perhaps losing their own souls in the process. This is the world Spielberg creates- not a black and white one, but one with many shades of gray. Morality is something that has no true shape or definition, and it is fascinating to watch our characters interact and operate in this world. Here, Spielberg the master filmmaker crafts an intelligent, powerful story that brims with importance and significance.
