Review:
Tim: With this film, Bill Pullman has the distinction to be the first (and so far, only) person to have a movie score the highest possible on my rating scale (10- Independence Day), and the lowest (1- Mr. Wrong). Congratulations, I suppose.
Mr. Wrong is a bad movie by any estimate, but it goes so far below and beyond terrible movies that I almost feel like a rating of 1 is too high. I absolutely hated everything about this movie: the cast, the writing—everything. I almost don’t know where to begin.
Let’s start with the cast. Ellen DeGeneres is simply not funny in this film. She didn’t make me laugh a single time. Plus, she makes a very poor romantic lead. She is wooden, has absolutely no chemistry with Bill Pullman, and was just not fun to see on screen at all. She was too over-the-top and unbelievable throughout most of the film. Bill Pullman is bad, but not as bad as you might expect. He gives a valiant effort, having to work with an absolutely terrible script. He’s not a great actor by any means, and that clearly shows here. How he ever signed on to this film in the first place is beyond me. It was a very poor choice. The rest of the cast are all quite lukewarm, so I won’t mention them. That being said, I have to single out Joan Cusack for her nutty, terrible performance. Why did she think this would be funny? I hated every single scene with her in it (to be fair, I hated every scene of the movie regardless of who was in it). The entire cast is awful.
Worst of all, the film’s plot is a sham. One-armed, one-eyed retarded monkeys with typewriters missing the “G,” “K”, “and “I” keys couldn’t have written a worse script. The movie starts out weakly, then descends deeper and deeper into utter crap, until you have to ask yourself if this was all supposed to be some big joke. The saddest thing is that none of this is funny. I paid strict attention to my own emotional state throughout the film. I didn’t laugh once. Not one single time. Even more amazing, I didn’t even smile. The corners of my mouth didn’t even consider raising, even ever so slightly. The movie had over 100 minutes to entertain me, and it didn’t, not even for one second.
I could go on and on about the many awful aspects of the film—the cheesy voiceover, a “flashback” scene that might be the worst all time, the complete lack of chemistry of any kind by any cast members, the sheer ridiculousness of every scene and every bit of dialogue, and much more. But, I won’t. I will stop here in my ranting and simply say this-- Mr. Wrong might easily be the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. And trust me, I’ve seen many, many bad movies in my day.
