Summary: Mr. Hobbs (James Stewart) takes his family to the beach for a much needed vacation. However, in dealing with housing problems and family issues, the vacation isn't exactly what Hobbs had in mind.
Review:
Tim: This is a fairly lightweight comedy starring James Stewart. Stewart and director Henry Koster have made a better comedy (Harvey). By no means is this a bad movie, but it is forgettable and light. There is a good balance between screwball comedy and heartwarming family issues, and Stewart does a good enough job as the linchpin holding together all the insanity around him.
The rest of the cast is decent, but none are particularly outstanding. Even Stewart himself isn't given enough to really shine. This is unfortunate, and hurts the movie.
Despite its flaws, Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation has a few memorable scenes, and does enough right to keep you fairly entertained throughout it duration. This isn't a great movie, however, which is quite apparent. If you're looking for terrific comedies from the 60's, you might want to look elsewhere.
