Review:
Tim: I was absolutely blown away by The Mist. Stephen King adaptations are spotty at best, but director Frank Darabont proves he is the master of King adaptations- The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile are both classics- and now, you can add The Mist to that list. This film is astounding.
Thomas Jane is excellent in the lead role. He's done the Stephen King thing before, but make no mistake- this is no Dreamcatcher. This film is amazing. Andre Braugher also puts in an important performance. The real showstopper, however, is Marcia Gay Harden. There are terrible things in the mist, but you soon realize, the most terrifying of all is the performance of Harden. She gives a memorable, chilling, antagonizing performance. The rest of the cast are all quite good as well.
Darabont creates a masterpiece here because of the balance between the external horrors and the internal ones. And, in a brilliant move, the internal horrors are at least equal (and in my mind, more) terrifying than the creatures in the mist.
This is a very scary movie, and amazingly, it never feels cheesy or over-the-top. The level of fear rises as the movie progresses, culminating in some incredibly dramatic moments. However, special mention must be made to the film's conclusion. The Mist ends in one of the most heartbreaking, shocking, unbelievable, gripping endings of all time. I heard one professional critic call it a "mental earthquake." It will stay with you, long, long after you finish the movie. There is also an amazingly powerful lesson to be learned from this movie. I won't write it here, because I don't want to spoil the ending.
The Mist is one of my all-time favorite horror movies. It is an instant classic. I can't say enough how much I loved this movie, even though it scared me, made me question the goodness of humanity, and crushed my soul at its conclusion. This is an unforgettable movie.
