Review:
Tim: Mission: Impossible 2 is much different from the original because where the first film was an action film that focused more on the cloak and dagger aspect of secret agents, this film takes the opposite avenue. John Woo directs a pretty much non-stop action film. The first Mission: Impossible was oftentimes more about the intellect than pure muscle. Its sequel focuses only on action, action, and more action. I prefer the more intelligent plot and intellect-focus of the original.
Tom Cruise is once again excellent as Ethan Hunt. He is an action superstar, and delivers once more. I really am not a fan of Thandie Newton, so it was difficult for me to watch her in this movie trying to sympathize and like her. She does, however, do a decent job. Ving Rhames, reprising his role from the original is good as usual. I really like his character in these movies, and I was a little disappointed that he didn't have more to do in this film.
For the most part, Mission: Impossible 2 is a good action film. The climactic motorcycle chase/fight scene is exciting, but a tad bit on the ridiculous side. That is where the suspension of disbelief failed, and John Woo moves from the plausible to the highly unlikely of being possible (although I do realize these movies deal with the impossible).
All in all, this is an adequate sequel. It continues the story of the characters although it can't quite improve on the original. Action film fans and especially Cruise fans won't want to miss this. In the end, Mission: Impossible 2 doesn't live up to its predecessor, but has enough to keep most fans satisfied.
