Summary: A Jesuit missionary (Jeremy Irons) find an unlikely ally in his battle against political corruption in an ex-soldier (Robert DeNiro) who is searching for forgiveness.

Review:

Tim: This is a very epic film about a small band of Jesuit priests trying to protect a South American Indian tribe from the colonial powers of Spain and Portugal.

The film is beautiful, set against a lush and dangerous landscape. The opening scene of the cross going down the waterfall is quite powerful and memorable. The music, too, is spectacular.

The Mission works well because of an excellent cast. Robert DeNiro is a spectacle to see. He is filled with quite a bit of rage and his transformation is remarkable to see. Jeremy Irons is terrific as well in one of his better performances.

This film is interestiing on many different levles- a commentary on colonial powers, religion's role in that; a tale of redemption; and an examination between faith and contempt for human life. While this movie is beautiful to look at and brings up interesting and thought provoking issues, it somewhat lacks in the entertainment department. This feels like a movie you would watch for a history or religion class, not for fun.

The concluding battle scenes are amazing and yet difficult to watch. The film ends in a realistic and memorable fashion. The Mission is a very educational film, but at times feels a bit too educational and not entertaining enough.
